Literally all of my Substack essays happen in my Notes app 👀 And I’m low key dreading winter bc I won’t be able to walk as long once it’s cold! So many good tips here! 🤗💕
Haha I’m so glad you relate!!! Half the time when I am “writing an essay” on my computer I am trying to make sense of a long list of bullet pointed run on paragraphs in my notes, half of which end up being deleted lolllll it will be hard when it gets cold you’re so right!! I love being outside to brainstorm
notes app my beloved.. my writing process has always been collecting lines here and there in my notes app and then bulk copy-pasting over to google docs for refinement
such a lovely read Andrew! I think walks and journaling are the most impactful for me. then I like to think that creative block only exists in my mind, and it comes up when I'm being a perfectionist. whenever I let myself do shitty art, I get back in the flow and the creative block is gone in less than a few days. there are also some beliefs/ideas that contribute to my creative blocks, such as 'if I write too much now, I might not have ideas in the future' (I know, silly) or 'if people start reading or listening to my work, I'll feel so much pressure' (so I self-sabotage and don't create, kind of afraid of success). thank you for this post :)
Thank you so much for your nice words and thoughtful comment 🩷🩷🩷I have had those SAME thoughts and they really get in the way! You’re so right: shitty art!! Embrace it!! Why?? Because what’s key with creativity is to be in the flow, I feel like. When you’re trapped in the perfectionist mindset, you’re avoiding what you really need:
Yes creative tourism is such a good idea and I just had to include it!!! I am so glad you enjoyed and thank you so much for your comment and for sharing!! I agree that walks and reading and journaling are my big 3, unless I count my precious coffee table books 🤣
Thank you so much for your comment!!! I really appreciate you reading 🩷
And yes do it!! Writing down little details will change your life!! Those little details seem like nothing in the moment. But they snowball into something great. Just keep capturing them 🩷

A solid 75% of all my plots come to me when I'm walking along the river near where I live
Haha so true! Half the time an idea seems to randomly appear when I’m out in nature or by the water in my town 🩷
