This is so raw. Thank you for your bravery sharing this. I just turned 37 and it's taken me that long to learn my parents were supposed to take care of me, not the other way around. So you can imagine this resonated deeply: "I will always strive to see my son as his own independent being: who owes me nothing and to whom i owe everything". Healing those generational wounds. We millennials may be a messy bunch but I'm really happy to see people my age accepting if parenthood isn't right for them and for those that chose that path, being damn good to their children.

Thank you so much for this wonderful comment 🩷 it is so confusing: we want our parents to love us, and we will sometimes do anything for that love

But 🩷I also have hope that many in our generation having children will avoid replicating our parents’ mistakes 🩷again thank you and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts!!!

OMG ! This post…. It gave me chills. I just started writing here on Substack, I was nervous because I read some of these stories and they are amazing writers. And I was so worried about judgement. But I started not to gain followers but to just release of lot of bottled up stuff inside of me. I had this conversation just the other day saying to someone that I want to write what’s in my head and in my heart and the things that I have been carrying for so long. And I kept saying once I go, I may ruffle some feathers. Reading Andrews post has been an inspiration to me because he is so free and unafraid, and that encourages me to be just like that when writing. When I saw this particular post and read the title “ I said “ FUCK YEAH” I so can relate. At this point in my life why should I keep my misery inside to protect others. It’s my truth and experience not theirs. Thank you again Andrew !! I’m ready now💕

MsEricka!!! Thank you sooo much for your comment I am so happy you have been inspired to embrace and express your own experiences! That misery was put on you by someone else: it’s THEIR burden to care, not yours! 🩷

As soon as I started reading this post, I thought of a book to suggest looking into. I haven’t read this book, but an author I follow on Instagram just shared about it - she hosted a conversation with the book’s author the other day. It’s called It’s Not Fair: Why It’s Time for a Grown-Up Conversation About How Adults Treat Children by Eloise Rickman. Seems like you might be interested in the perspective. I am, not sure when I’ll find time to look into it though

One of my theories is that it has to do with generational trauma and the stigma surrounding mental health treatment.

I guarantee you that if all of us just started writing about the trauma our parents put us through, thousands of us would look like we are copying each other lol but it is they who copied each other

💯no doubt!!! So much stigma about mental health issues in that generation and yet: SO MUCH childhood trauma they try to ignore

Yes! And please nobody think I am copying because I was just in my head on how to write about the damage that generational trauma does to people!! This post is proof of it!!!

Absolutely! Have you heard of The Holistic Psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera? Some of her work centers on this concept, and I have found her books to be very helpful in many aspects. So eye opening and supportive in granting oneself empathy during healing.
