thank you for writing this! i really enjoyed reading and it was refreshing to see a take like this (i get nervous to read too many opinions, as i am often unsure if i would be triggered or feel fearful).
the discourse about the lgbtq+ community in the middle east is unbelievably flawed, as you said it doesn't make sense to pick and choose who deserves human rights, but as a palestinian living in the middle east, i can tell you with ease that my lgbtq+ friends (despite the hardships they face) are the most pro palestine group i've ever met, they are the loudest, they are the first ones at protests, and i feel that should say something. it shows how loyal we are to our country.
it is important to us to be safe, have human rights, in order to grow and work a society.
the issues we have in regards to queerness and the west's opinions on it is rooted in Islamophobia, too. i will of course not attempt to say we are a society completely accepting of differences, but it's also close-minded to assume that just because one religion has one opinion means that the people, as a whole, does so as well. the arab world is incredibly nuanced, but it seems the west just wants to fit us in a box. this is the most frustrating.
thank you for writing on palestine. all the best to you
Thank you so much for your comment! I am so sorry for the way you are constantly dehumanized by the media in my country and many other countries. To me this is not a matter of opinion; this is a matter of seeing reality. And the reality is that Palestinians are suffering enormously for nothing. Absolutely nothing: a made up concept, a *deliberately* racist entity. People need to see that all the “complications” they come up with can never erase the core fact: Palestinian rights are human rights, and human rights are absolute.
You are right when you mention Islamophobia: what Islamophobia is to me is collectivization. As you point out, the western media reduces all Palestinians as one homogenous “thing,” and that “thing” is bad, and Palestinians are hit by a DOUBLE collectivization: racism towards Arabs (at the heart of the Zionist and British colonial project from the beginning) and Islamophobia.
This is *ZENITH* racism. The Christian Palestinian is erased, the queer Palestinian is erased, the atheist Palestinian is erased, the artistic and dreamy and musical Palestinian is erased, the MUSLIM Palestinian is erased because the Muslim Palestinian is constructed into an collectivized “Islamic-fascist” entity in the delusional and white supremacist mind of the western Zionist.
I will pray for you and yours and I will continue to write about this issue periodically. People must be helped to see that all the “complications” are worthless compared to the suffering of Palestinians. Thank you so much for your comment and truly all the best to you 🩷
such a great post that touches on the importance of seeing palestinian rights as human rights and to unlearn a lot of colonial thinking. I love that you mentioned the queer rights portion because a lot of people tend to forget that queer palestinians exist as well, and the biggest threat to them isn’t other palestinians but israel itself.
Thank you so much for your comment! It truly enrages me the way people suggest that queer people should feel foolish for supporting the BASIC HUMAN FUCKING DIGNITY of Palestinians not to mention as you point out: completely erases the fact that queer Palestinians are obviously worse off under Israeli rule like, wtf?!?!? Thank you so much for your comment. “The biggest threat to them isn’t other Palestinians but Israel itself” so true
thank you for writing this!! I couldn’t believe the amount of people that would ridicule queer people or lgbtq supporters for supporting palestine too, as if they’re mutually exclusive. it also falls back on a lot of stereotypical islamophobia that all arabs and muslims are homophobic.
